Short answer first. If you want rules that you cannot switch off in a weak moment, and that a child cannot delete or beat by changing the clock, check three things: how hard it is to loosen a rule, whether changing the clock helps, and whether the app can be uninstalled. Built in Digital Wellbeing and Screen Time are free and handy, but a limit can be ignored with a tap. Teen modes inside TikTok style apps and WeChat only cover that one app. Tools like AppBlock and Opal do a lot, and strict mode or uninstall lock is usually paid. Ripple is free. Android v0.1.9 has daily limits, 0 minute limits, strict mode, uninstall protection, clock change protection and blocking only WeChat Channels and Moments. iPhone v0.1.5 has schedules, the block on deleting apps, clock change protection and unlock codes. Adults and parents are covered separately below.
| Ripple (Android v0.1.9 / iPhone v0.1.5) | Digital Wellbeing, Screen Time | In-app teen modes | AppBlock, Stay Focused, Opal and similar | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Loosening a rule | Wait 15 min to 2 h or enter an unlock code someone else holds; Android strict mode needs the code | Tap ignore, or switch it off in settings | Parent password, covers one app only | Strict mode and uninstall lock are mostly paid |
| Changing the clock | Timers use time since boot, so it does nothing | Changing the date often resets the day | Up to each app | Partly |
| Uninstall protection | Android: accessibility and device admin, optional on-device wireless debugging guard; iPhone: system block on deleting apps | None | Not applicable | Mostly in paid tiers |
| Daily limit per app | Android yes, including 0 minutes and custom minutes; iPhone not yet | Yes | Own app only | Yes |
| Close only WeChat Channels and Moments | Android yes; since v0.1.9 you can get a few minutes, then write a reason for 5 more, up to 3 times a day | No | WeChat teen mode turns some parts off | Usually no |
| Split screen, floating window, PiP | Blocked on Android since v0.1.8 | Not applicable | Not applicable | Not documented |
| Price and account | Free, no ads, no account, settings stay on the phone | Free, tied to the system account | Free | Subscriptions, usually an account |

iPhone v0.1.5 has schedules, the block on deleting apps, clock change protection and unlock codes. Daily limits, strict mode and in-app blocking are Android only for now.
On OPPO phones a floating window is covered and muted, but the window itself is not closed yet.
On Android, give TikTok, Instagram or YouTube a daily limit with custom minutes. Set the hardest one to 0 minutes and it stays closed all day.
Android can close just Channels and Moments while chats and payments keep working. Since v0.1.9 you can get a few minutes first, then write a reason for 5 more, up to 3 times a day.
Loosening a rule needs a 15 minute to 2 hour wait or an unlock code a friend holds. With strict mode on Android only the code works.
Both Android and iPhone can block chosen apps on a schedule. See bedtime and work focus.
Since Android v0.1.8 you can cap daily opens and add a 5 to 30 second pause. See open limits.
iPhone v0.1.5 blocks on a schedule in the background, can block deleting apps, and changing the clock does not shorten a wait.
On Android, uninstalling needs the countdown or the parent's code. On iPhone the block on deleting apps stops long press removal.
Both platforms time with the time since boot. See clock changes.
Both platforms can close games and short videos on a schedule. See school hours.
Android closes only Channels and Moments, so the child can still message home. See WeChat Channels.

Give your code to family or a friend. On a child's phone the parent keeps it.
Ripple for Android is free.
